If you are currently leasing one of Race’s Wireless Routers, here are some instructions on how to manage the Wireless SSID(s) and WPA Security Key(s).
CONNECT TO THE WIRELESS GATEWAY ROUTER
To make any changes to the Wireless SSID and Security Key, you must first access the router’s web-based configuration tools.
Connect to the gateway router either with an Ethernet patch cable (preferred) OR via the wireless SSID (Wi-Fi name) and WPA Key (Password). The Default SSID and WPA Key can be found on the white Default Settings sticker on the router. If your router does not have a Default Settings sticker, this information can also be located on the device label. The default SSID will start with CXNK. This will be your Wi-Fi network name unless it was changed by the technician during installation. If your Wi-Fi settings are not default, you will use your normal Wi-Fi name and password. The bottom two lines of the Default Settings sticker also contain the IP address and username/password you will need to access the web-based configuration tools.
Once you have successfully connected to the Race internet, launch your default web browser, such as Chrome, Safari, Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc. In the Address bar, enter 192.168.1.1 or the IP address specified on the Default Settings sticker as the router’s default IP address, then press Enter.
If you are connected to the Race internet and have entered the correct IP address, you will be prompted for a username and password to access the web-based configuration tools. The default username is 'admin' and the default password is located on the bottom line of the Default Settings sticker after 'admin/'.
CHANGE WIRELESS SETTINGS
Race routers use a feature called Band Steering that allows devices to connect to whichever Wi-Fi band will give them better performance based on multiple factors like signal strength, device capabilities, and radio interference. For Band Steering to work, the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz SSID and Password must be the same. If you set different names for the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands, you will need to manually connect your devices to whichever band you prefer and Band Steering will be disabled.
If you have the gray router with a blue light on the corner, click the 'Wi-Fi' drop-down at the left of the screen.
Click 'Primary Network'. It will open a window to the right.
The top line is SSID. This is your Wi-Fi name. Set it to the desired value.
Hide SSID should be Off.
Security Type should be WPA-WPA2-Personal.
The bottom line is your Wi-Fi password. It must be a minimum of 8 characters.
Once you have entered the desired name and password, click Apply in the bottom left of the window.
This router has Band Steering enabled as a requirement and this name/password combination will apply to both the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands.
If you have the black router shaped like a ream of paper standing on end, click the 'Wireless' button in the middle of the screen. This will open a menu on the left.
Click on the 2.4G Network to display more options under that specific network.
Click SSID Setup.
Then click in the 'Rename SSID' field and type in your preferred SSID name.
Once complete, click Apply.
To change the password, click Security.
Click the radial button to the left of Use Custom Security Key.
Click in the 'Use Custom Security Key' field and type in your preferred security key. It must be a minimum of 8 characters.
Once complete, click Apply.
Next, click on the 5G Network to display more options under that specific network. Then, click SSID Setup. Then, click in the Rename SSID field and type in your preferred SSID name. Once complete, click Apply.
This router does not have Band Steering enabled by default. You can choose to give the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands different names if desired.
We advise to enter the same name for both bands to take advantage of the Band Steering feature.
If you are using Race Mesh units, Band Steering is required and the SSIDs must remain the same.
NOTE: We strongly advise that you keep all other settings default unless you know how each setting will affect your connectivity.
